The non-structural service empowering the residents waiting for structural prevention

Through flood preparation, a resident-elected flood committee, JC Plan_D gives voice to the Jefferson Chalmers‘ residents. The service also provide an emergency service during a flood to achieve a better prevention. The final deliverable is an animation and a service blueprint.

Service Design

This service aims at bridge the gap in flood information and create neighborhood empowerment to better prepare residents before a flood. Also, it is able to create a service that helps Detroit residents get connected to localized Jefferson Chalmers weather information, rescuer resources, and community members during a flood emergency

Research

We conducted some secondary research to better know about this area. Here are the goals for the research we've set up:

  • Reasons for flood risk in Detroit

  • Detroit flood risk now and projection

  • Flood impacts people

  • Factors that perpetuate flood impacts

  • Flood protocols and protection from other areas

At the end of this step, we also analyze the collected data and visualize them, facilitating our communication with our target audiences.

Residents Interview

Interview with Jefferson Chalmers residents to generate discussion and learn more about participants needs, plain points, and desires.

Insight

  • There is a lack of preparation from feeling powerless

  • Flood information does not reach the residents accurately successfully

  • Residents feel unsupported by local government

  • There are generational differences with communication channels

Co-Creation Session

Facilitate discussion and generate an environment of openness and trust to ensure all participants were comfortable to share their experiences. Understand what information residents know and need. Learn how to organize a group of community members to create a flood advisory committee
